Oude September Kaas – aged farmhouse cheese, matured for 12 months
The Oude September Kaas is an artisanal aged farmhouse cheese with a full, rich farmhouse flavour. It is made from milk from September, when the cows graze on the last of the summer grass, and then matured for a year on wooden shelves. The result is a tangy yet creamy aged cheese with crunchy cheese crystals.
Why is it called September Cheese?
The name refers to the month in which the milk is collected. In September, the cows graze on the last of the summer grass. That grass gives the milk a rich, full flavour that can still be tasted in the cheese after a year of maturing. In this way, every Oude September Kaas is a little piece of the late summer of the previous year.
Made on the Van Erk family farm
The cheese is made by the Van Erk cheesemaking family in Berkenwoude, in the Groene Hart. They make artisanal cheese from the milk of their own cows. The milk is thermised: a mild heat treatment that is less intensive than pasteurisation. This preserves much of the characteristic farmhouse flavour. Because the milk is thermised and not raw, we call this a farmhouse cheese and not a farmhouse cheese.
Flavour: full, tangy and yet creamy
After 12 months of maturing on wooden shelves, the Oude September Kaas has a full, tangy flavour with a creamy undertone. During maturing, small, crunchy cheese crystals form: a sign of a well-matured cheese. Read what those crystals are exactly in our blog White crystals in aged cheese.
How to enjoy Oude September Kaas

- On the snack board, with walnuts, fig jam or mustard-dill sauce
- With a glass of red wine or a full-bodied beer
- Grated over pasta, casseroles or salads
Tip: take the cheese out of the refrigerator half an hour before serving, then the flavour will come out best.

Farmhouse cheese is made on the farm from fresh milk from their own cows. As a result, the cheese often has a fuller, creamier and more authentic character than factory-made cheese.
Is farmhouse cheese made from raw milk?
Many farmhouse cheeses are made from raw milk, but also from pasteurized milk. Therefore, always check the product information of the cheese you choose.
How do you best store farmhouse cheese?
Store farmhouse cheese in cheese paper or parchment paper in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. This will keep the cheese fresh for longer and preserve its flavor and texture.
What does farmhouse cheese pair well with?
Farmhouse cheese is delicious on bread, in a toasted sandwich or on a snack platter. Its rich flavour also shines in salads, casseroles or grated over pasta.
Why choose Erfgoed Stelling Kaas?
