Comté: French mountain cheese with a rich flavour
Comté is a French AOP cheese from the Jura Mountains. This hard cheese is made from raw cow's milk using traditional methods and aged for at least 4 months, giving it a full, nutty flavour with subtle fruity notes. The longer it is aged, the more intense its aroma.
Note: Comté is a different cheese from Gruyère. Both are mountain cheeses, but Comté comes from the French Jura and Gruyère from Switzerland.
Origin and history
Comté has been made in the Jura Mountains for centuries. Farmers pooled their milk to make large, long-lasting cheeses. This is still done in local dairies, known as fruitières, using milk from Montbéliarde and French Simmental cows.
How to use Comté
- Cheese board: with nuts, grapes and a glass of white wine
- Fondue: for an authentic cheese fondue
- Gratin: grated over potato gratin or oven dishes
- Bread and sandwiches: on fresh bread or in a croque monsieur

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you cut the cheese yourselves?
Yes, we cut all the cheeses ourselves—and only when the order comes in. That way, they’re always fresh.
Can you ship cheese?
Yes, our cheese is vacuum-packed by default and can withstand quite a bit.
How can I keep cheese fresh for as long as possible?
Take the vacuum-packed cheese out of the refrigerator one hour before consumption and allow it to come to room temperature. Once the cheese is at room temperature, open the packaging and discard it. After (partially) consuming the cheese, wrap it in the provided cheese paper. Then refrigerate the cheese again. Once the cheese has been finished, discard the cheese paper to prevent cross-contamination.
Is your cheese lactose-free?
Yes and no. Some cheeses contain lactose and others do not. The entire Weydeland range is lactose-free and can therefore be eaten by people with lactose intolerance. Do you have questions about which cheeses contain lactose? Then please contact us!
Where does your hard cheese come from?
Our hard cheese comes from the Netherlands (Beemster), France, Switzerland and Italy. We import the Parmesan cheese ourselves directly from the farmer.
